Dmitry Orlov! I need to get me some tickets.

Technically, I believe that’s a penalty (getting low to strike at the legs instead of upper body).
I’m glad the NHL allows ref discretion. If it was hard-line, having to crack down on every little thing, it would suck. I mean, this was dramatic, but it actually doesn’t look like super violent contact...

It was a boring game other than that hit

Looks more an open ice hip check to me

That’s what they’re calling it, but to me it looked like clipping. A quick trip to the
rulebook
blurs the line even more.

22 second mark for slow motion.
As far as I can tell the most substantial differences are the height, the severity and the ref’s attitude. That one looked slightly (very) above the knees, so I guess it’s ok... but then one of the video examples looks that way too.
Either way, I don’t think it should have been called, like I said while it looked dramatic it didn’t look especially violent. Well executed. Good play. I’m just not 100% about it being a legal hit either way. Also gray area ref’s choice etc etc and I prefer it that way to a black-and-white game.

Having referees discretion on plays like this is definitely great. I have a feeling it wasn’t called partially because of the fact that it wasn’t malicious and Duchene was able to continue on rather quickly and didn’t appear injured.

Basically any hit done cleanly enough is legal, fwit. I mean, there’s still quite a lot of cross-checking...

LA got called on the cross check a lot last night in Minnesota. League is more concerned with high hits and boarding than anything tbh
